Where to Learn Graphic Design for Free

Are you looking for free ways to learn graphic design online? These essential resources are just what you need!

Graphic design is a dense subject, and takes a fair bit of study to truly understand and become an expert in. But now, with the Internet and online creators, this previously “secret” knowledge is no longer locked behind university and design school walls.

In this article, we’ll be looking at some incredibly helpful resources to help you learn graphic design online, for free! Let’s get into them!

YouTube

If you’re someone that finds video the most effective way of learning, there are many free graphic design tutorials available on YouTube. You can find videos on topics such as typography, colour theory, animation, as well as a wealth of guides on specific software, like Adobe Photoshop, Cinema 4D, and more.

Some of my personal favourite design-related YouTube Channels are…

  • The Futur: This channel covers a wide range of design topics, from typography to motion graphics.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud: This channel offers tutorials on how to use Adobe's design software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

  • DesignCourse: This channel offers video courses on a variety of design topics, including web design, user experience design, and logo design.

  • Envato Tuts+: This channel offers video tutorials on a variety of design topics, including web design, graphic design, and video editing.

Udemy

Udemy is, for the most part, a paid course platform in which a range of industry experts teach you what they know. But, Udemy also offers several free courses, many of which are graphic design based.

These courses cover a broad range of topics such as logo design, web design, and typography, and are often perfect for people with minimal graphic design experience who want to get a feel for the industry and the work required.

Here are a few course suggestions for you to try out on Udemy:

Blogs

I’m personally someone who loves reading (and writing!) articles. I find having everything laid out on the page and being able to read at my own pace a very productive way of learning. And if you’re in the same boat, you’re in luck! There’s no shortage of fantastic blogs dedicated to graphic design out there for you to enjoy.

I highly recommend you check out:

  • Creative Bloq: This blog covers a wide range of topics, including typography, illustration, web design, and branding. It also publishes articles, tutorials, and reviews to help graphic designers stay on top of their game.

  • Smashing Magazine: This blog is a great resource for learning about the latest trends in web design, user experience, and front-end development. It also publishes articles on a variety of other topics related to graphic design.

  • Creative Review: This British blog is a great source of inspiration for graphic designers. It features articles on a variety of topics, including typography, illustration, and photography.

  • My Blog: I of course couldn’t talk about graphic design blogs and not include my own on the list! I publish new articles every week, about graphic design, freelancing, wellbeing, productivity, and more.

Conclusion

In our ever-connected world with opportunities for everyone to create and publish their work, there’s no shortage of graphic design experts sharing their knowledge online. And for you, as someone looking to develop their design skill, there’s a wealth of information just waiting to be discovered!

The above are just three simple ways that you can learn graphic design for free online, but three ways that I’ve found to be incredibly valuable throughout my own design journey.

Do you have another resource that you think everyone should know? If so, please let me know!
