The Key Lessons from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Want to see how the word’s most productive people work? This article will give you all the key lessons from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

I’m a bit of a book nerd. I have something like seven hundred books in different places around my house. Seriously, there are piles of books everywhere! So naturally, my love of books and my interest in optimizing my workflow merge every now and then.

I recently read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Whilst it was published in 1989, the advice in this book is timeless, and is still very much of use in today’s fast-paced world.

If you’re looking to up your productivity game, but don’t have time to read a whole book, all the key lessons are right here for you to enjoy!

Check them out below:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

This habit is about taking responsibility for your life and your choices. It means recognizing that you have the power to choose your response to any situation, regardless of the circumstances.

Instead of being reactive, waiting for things to happen to you, be proactive and take action to create the outcomes you desire.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

This one is about establishing a clear vision and purpose for your life. It means thinking about what you want to accomplish and creating a plan to achieve it. When you begin with the end in mind, you can focus your efforts and resources on the things that matter most to you.

If you’re someone that finds yourself feeling a bit lost, or just “going through the motions” of day to day life, you’d really benefit from this habit.

Sit down, no music, no other distractions, and really think about what it is you want to achieve in your life. Once you’ve got a goal, write down all the ongoing habits that would help you hit your goals. When the habits are discovered, you can start putting them to work in your everyday life.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

This habit is about prioritizing your time and energy based on what is most important to you. It means focusing on the things that are important but not urgent, like personal growth, relationships, and long-term goals. By putting first things first, you can avoid getting caught up in the busyness of daily life and stay focused on what matters most.

An effective way to do this is by creating three lists, entitled Must, Should, and Want. In these lists, write the things you must do each day, what you should do each day, and what you want to do each day.

Depending on what your goals are, you can then use these lists to determine how you use the available hours in your day.

This is quite a useful way of organizing your day, and it’s discussed further (along with many more) in my Productivity Systems course here.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

This habit is about seeking mutual benefit in all interactions. It means looking for solutions that benefit everyone involved, rather than just trying to win at all costs. When you think win-win, you can create more positive and productive relationships with others.

This is especially true if you find yourself working with tricky clients. Regardless of the issue or dispute at hand, it’s beneficial to you to find a solution that works for both sides. This goes for all relationships in your life.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

This habit is about listening to others before trying to communicate your own ideas. It means putting yourself in someone else's shoes and trying to see things from their perspective. When you seek first to understand, you can build stronger relationships and communicate more effectively with others.

All too often, we’re quick to get our point across, which can, in many instances, result in us not listening to what the other person says, refusing to change our point of view in any way. Instead, when you make a point of listening to what the other person has to say, you’ll have a more complete view of the situation at hand, essential for making rational decisions.

Habit 6: Synergize

This habit is about working together to achieve greater results than you could on your own. It means combining your strengths with others and creating something new and better. When you synergize, you can create more innovative and effective solutions to problems.

Working in a freelance role, it can often feel like you’re in a silo. It can feel like you have to handle every single aspect of your business with no external help. This isn’t the case!

There are tonnes of ways that you can bring in outside help to make your life easier and more productive. One simple way is hiring an online PA to help with simple things like meeting scheduling, shopping, calendar sorting, and all those other little tasks that take up time.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

This habit is about taking care of yourself and continually improving your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It means investing time and energy in activities that recharge and renew you. When you sharpen the saw, you can increase your effectiveness in all areas of your life.

Continuous improvement is a cornerstone of Atomic Habits, the great book by productivity guru James Clear. You can read the key lessons from Atomic Habits here.

Conclusion

Overall, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a comprehensive framework for personal growth and effectiveness. By practicing these habits consistently, you can become more proactive, purposeful, and productive in all areas of your life.
