Pingdom

If you’re new to SEO research, you may not know that search engines, as well as checking content type and quality, also rank your website based on its usability and load times.

Yep! If your website is slow to load, that will have a drastic effect on its SEO score. This will become even more so when Google introduce a few new ranking factors primarily focussing on usability.

To make sure you’re on top of this, Pingdom have an incredible (and free!) tool that allows you to check the speed at which your website loads.

When you pop your URL into the tool, it will generate a report with a list of areas that your website can improve on.

If you’re using WordPress to power your website or blog, then you NEED to be using Yoast. It’s a free plugin that scores your page content from an SEO perspective. It has a handy traffic light system which will let you know if what you’re working on is search engine friendly! And if it’s not, it’ll give you a list of practical, actionable suggestions on what you can do to improve it!

Don’t worry if you’re not using WordPress though! Yoast also has a website that you can play with! It has the catchy name of the Real-Time Content Analysis section. This tool does pretty much the same job, except you need to upload your page’s HTML code (or you can include just plain text), along with a focus keyword, and it’ll let you know how good the on-page SEO is!

Hubspot’s Website Grader

This tool allows you to enter a URL (be that your own or a competitor's) and it will tell you a couple of things. One; it’ll tell you how well your site is functioning from an SEO and inbound marketing point of view, and two; the steps that you can take to fix any issues or problems.

Keep in mind that while this tool can be super helpful, it only analyses your homepage. This means that if you want to complete a more detailed analysis of your website’s SEO, you should look at using some of the other tools on this list.
